Egypt's butterfly star wins by 1.87 seconds, Algeria's Houd Abed and Namibia's Roselinda Matyayi reach backstroke finals, and 20 African swimmers from 14 nations take to the water in the 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly

DAKAR, Senegal, Sunday 1 November 2026 – Some gold medals are won by a fingertip. Zain Ali won his with clear water behind him. The Egyptian led the men's 100m butterfly final from the first stroke to the touch and stopped the clock at 52.16, almost two seconds ahead of the field. It gave Africa its first swimming gold medal of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

His win came only hours after South Africa's Leah Markgraaff won the continent's first pool medal, silver in the morning's 400m freestyle. Between them, Egypt and South Africa have put Africa on the swimming medal table on the first day of the first Olympic event ever held on African soil.

Ali was not the only African story of the session. Six African swimmers reached the four finals at the Complexe Tour de l'Oeuf, and in total 20 swimmers from 14 African nations raced in the 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly events.

Ali: Gold, And Daylight

Ali came into the final as the fastest qualifier, having topped the heats in 53.96, and he started from lane four. What followed was a statement.

He turned first in 24.18, 0.53 clear of Serbia's Aleksej Kalanj, and then pulled away. His second 50m of 27.98 was the only back half in the final under 29 seconds, 1.15 seconds faster than anyone else's. Kalanj took silver in 54.03 and Slovakia's Matias Kristof bronze in 54.71, but the race belonged to Ali long before the wall.

His 52.16 was 1.80 seconds faster than his own heats time. A winning margin of 1.87 seconds in a 100m butterfly final at this level is rare, and it marks the young Egyptian as one of the standout performers of the Games so far.

Rieck And Torki Make It Three In The Butterfly Final

Ali had company. Africa provided three of the eight finalists in the men's 100m butterfly.

Kenya's Jeremy Rieck qualified sixth in 56.14 and then went faster in the final. He turned fourth in 25.39, the fourth-fastest opening split in the final, held his place into the second half and finished sixth in 55.51. That was an improvement of 0.63 seconds on his morning swim and put him 0.18 ahead of the Czech Republic's Zdenek Prochazka.

Algeria's Salaheddine Torki was the fifth-fastest qualifier in 55.97. In the final he turned seventh in 25.76 and finished eighth in 56.12, just 0.15 outside his heats time. Reaching an Olympic final, on the continent, is an achievement in its own right.

Abed Holds Fifth From Start To Finish

In the men's 200m backstroke, Algeria's Houd Abed qualified fifth in 2:06.71 and swam an evenly judged final. He was fifth at 50m (29.14), fifth at 100m (1:01.02), fifth at 150m (1:34.23) and fifth at the finish in 2:07.51, 1.14 seconds clear of Ukraine's Kyrylo Malesyk in sixth. New Zealand's Ariel Muchirahondo won in 1:59.15.

Tunisia's Mohamed Yassine Ben Ajmia took the eighth and final place in the final, qualifying in 2:16.61, 0.50 ahead of Brunei's Danniel Chan. He finished eighth in 2:16.75, within 0.14 of his heats time, and his last 50m (35.01) was quicker than the length before it.

Matyayi Carries Namibia Into The Backstroke Final

Namibia's Roselinda Matyayi was the only African in the women's 200m backstroke final. She earned her place with a heats swim of 2:28.78, more than two seconds clear of ninth place. In the final she finished eighth in 2:29.41, and her pacing over the last 150m was remarkably steady: 38.02, 38.08 and 38.13, a spread of only 0.11 seconds. Argentina's Cecilia Dieleke won gold in 2:10.05.

In The Heats: Every Nation Counts

The finals told only part of the story. Fourteen more African swimmers raced in the heats, several of them separated from their rivals by the smallest of margins.

In the men's 100m butterfly, Madagascar's Tendry Rakotobe finished 14th in 58.06, sitting between Haiti's Jude Christophe Jerome (58.05) and Barbados's Victor Ashby (58.07), with all three separated by two hundredths. Zambia's Mulenga Cole was involved in an even tighter group: 22nd in 1:00.08, one hundredth behind 21st place and two behind 20th. Namibia's Lorenzo Esterhuizen (18th, 58.81) and Nigeria's Aidan Dumuje-Abili (19th, 59.73) both went under the minute. Rwanda's Sheja Murenzi (27th, 1:03.89), Comoros's Ali El Wafa Younes (28th, 1:06.84) and Ethiopia's Dagim Kiros Habte (29th, 1:09.16) completed an African contingent of ten in a field of 30.

In the women's 200m backstroke, Cabo Verde's Kaila Dacruz led the African swimmers outside the final, tenth in 2:35.65. Tanzania's Crissa Denis Dillip was 11th in 2:36.81, and Rwanda's Kalisa Keza completed the distance in 3:06.58. Four of the 12 swimmers in the event were African.

The women's 100m butterfly heats featured four African swimmers. Tanzania's Filbertha Demello was the fastest of them, 15th in 1:14.16, ahead of Nigeria's Akinsanmi (16th, 1:15.69). Malawi's Danielle Kanjadza (18th, 1:30.41) and Ethiopia's Elham Hussien (19th, 1:37.17) also raced on the world youth stage for their nations.

The Continental Picture

After the first day in the pool, Africa has a gold and a silver from two different nations, six finalists across four finals, and swimmers racing for nations from Algiers to Antananarivo and Cairo to Lusaka. Egypt's Ali has set the standard. The swimming programme at Dakar 2026 continues at the Complexe Tour de l'Oeuf.
